Crossed Legs , 16"x12", acrylic on canvas panel, $175 on Etsy
Welcome!
I continue to be inspired by an amazing collection of old b&w photographs of my ancestors. The painting above is of Dorothy Marr. She was my Grandfather's sister's oldest daughter.
As I spent time recreating her on the canvas, her three siblings were first edited out. I saw this young woman as a bit more colorful and able to occupy the canvas as a solitary, yet confident young woman. I especially love the crossed legs of both the bench and Dorothy. It somehow made them connected and comfortable with each other.
I call this series of paintings THE ART OF MAKE BELIEVE.

Art History
(from Artcyclopedia.com)
Renaissance Europe was not a promising place for female artists to emerge. Women were expected to marry and have children, and those who did work were not welcomed into male-dominated professions. In fact women were unable to even receive formal art training (a cornerstone of which was the study of the nude).
But some did emerge. Privately taught, often by their fathers who were drafting them into the family business, and talented enough to gain commissions on merit alone, some women successfully made a living as artists.
