Events & Shows Tenacity, Guts and Grace An exhibition for women artists of the present to pay tribute to women artists of the past. Joan Brown's work is what inspired me to make this painting. Here's a brief bio on her and how she inspired the piece you see above. Joan Brown was born in 1938 in San Francisco. She attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. After her first year of art school studying the basics of drawing, design, color and composition she considered quitting the program because she was discouraged. The summer after her first year she enrolled in a landscape painting class taught by Elmer Bischoff, which reinforced her commitment to studying art. She also studied with Richard Diebenkorn, Sonia Gechtoff, Robert Howard, Frank Lobdell, and Manuel Neri. She began to win awards and exhibit her work while still in school. In May of 1959 she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 1960 she had her first exhibition in New York at the Staempfli Gallery. She traveled and exhibited her work extensively. In October 1990 she was killed in a construction accident in Puttaparthi, India. Joan Brown inspires me because she never gave up and first and foremost she made art for herself. Her art was a visual diary of her life, including several paintings of her son when he was a young boy. Those paintings of her son are what inspired me to make a piece for this exhibition, “Tenacity, Guts and Grace”. The painting I’ve made, “Red Ball” is part of my visual diary. The painting is made from a black and white photograph of my brother Mark in 1952. He was just two years old. This is a large painting for me, again inspired by Joan Brown. She said she liked to paint large because it allowed her to feel like a participant. Joan Brown painted with broad brushes, palette knives and large trowels. I made this piece using some of her painting techniques. It was a pleasure studying Joan Brown and learning more about her. She is an inspiration. The gallery maintains a strong relationship to the University of California, Davis’ Art Department.
